Every photograph, with its creator, source, licence and what we changed.
The policy
Photographs are used only where a freely licensed, commercially usable and genuinely relevant image exists. Only three licences are accepted — CC0, the Public Domain Mark, and CC BY — because the pipeline crops and resizes every image, and a ShareAlike derivative would carry a relicensing obligation we are not prepared to accept silently on a reader's behalf.
Everything else is an original diagram produced for this publication.
People in photographs
No photograph of an identifiable named individual is used. A legal-information site that illustrates an entry with somebody's portrait invites the reader to assume that person is connected to the publication, the subject matter, or a legal proceeding. Where people appear in an image, they are incidental to a scene and have no connection to the entry, to this publication, or to any case.
What we do to an image
Each photograph is downloaded, cropped to a 1200 by 675 frame and re-encoded as JPEG and WebP. Nothing is hotlinked, so viewing an entry sends no request to the original host. The modification is recorded against every image below, as the licences require.
